Postdoctoral Research Associate in Microbiome – Antibiotic interactions

University of Oxford

Description

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the newly established lab of Dr Mathew Stracy, based in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford. The project will focus on understanding how antibiotics cause collateral damage to gut microbial communities. This will involve experiments with microbial communities in vitro as well as using metagenomic sequencing in patient samples. The aim is to deconvolve the key factors that determine how antibiotics affect a patient's resident microbial population and any resistant pathogens persisting within it in order to develop ways to minimize the spread of antibiotic resistance both within and between patients.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant subject (microbiology, molecular biology, microbial genomics, or a related field). You will have prior experience working with bacteria in anaerobic conditions and working with microbial communities demonstrated by first author publications in scientific journals. You will have proven skills using metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatics to study microbiomes/microbial communities and an excellent knowledge of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. We are looking for an individual who enjoys interdisciplinary experimental research and has a drive to learn and apply new methods. The post-holder should be highly motivated to explore new ideas and able to contribute to the study design.

This is a fixed-term appointment available for 2 years in the first instance. If you are interested in this role, and have the skills and experience we are looking for, please apply online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application. Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Mathew Stracy at mathew.stracy@path.ox.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on Monday 18 July 2022. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
