The IJCLab (Laboratoire de Physique des 2 InfinisIrène Joliot Curie https: // www. ijclab.in2p3.fr/), an IN2P3/CNRS and Université Paris-Saclay laboratory, is inviting applications for a post-doctoral position to work in the field of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with the Pierre Auger Observatory. The post-doctoral fellow will contribute in particular to the commissioning of the Auger Observatory upgrade (AugerPrime) currently being deployed, to data analysis and to the preparation of the scientific exploitation of future data. Located on a semi-arid plateau in the province of Mendoza, western Argentina, the Pierre Auger Observatory is currently the largest cosmic ray observatory in the world. It consists of a network of 1600 particle detection stations (based on the Cherenkov effect) spaced 1500 m apart on a triangular grid and covering an area of 3000 km2, and 24 fluorescence telescopes distributed over four sites and oriented to overlook the particle detector network. The observatory is currently undergoing an upgrade, called AugerPrime, which aims to improve the characterisation of atmospheric sheaves to better identify the nature of primary cosmic rays. The main components of the upgrade are the addition of scintillators and antennas to each of the existing detection stations. The new system also requires new electronics. It will allow multiple observations of the same atmospheric sheaf, resulting in a high-resolution separation of the electromagnetic and muonics components to improve the sensitivity of measuring cosmic ray composition at the highest energies. The IJCLab group is one of the historical groups of the Auger Observatory, with particular expertise in the surface detector and its data. The group has contributed to the construction and acquisition of the data, from the definition of the triggering conditions and event selection to their reconstruction. It has also actively contributed to the high-level analysis of the data. The team is currently responsible for the electronics of the upgrade, and is in parallel involved in the scientific preparation of future data through its key contributions to the scientific output of the current Observatory, in particular on the topics of cosmic ray anisotropies, the energy spectrum, photon and neutrino searches, and new physics searches.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate must have a PhD or equivalent degree in physics (astroparticles, particle physics, astrophysics). A good knowledge of programming, data analysis and mathematical methods is desirable.
