University Of Queensland

Description

School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering

Academic Level A

Full-time, Fixed-term position until 31 December 2024

Closing date on 1 August 2022 at 11.00pm AEST (R-13559)

About This Opportunity

This is a critical research support position for a major hypersonics research  group with a global reputation for high quality state of the art work. The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be to work in UQ's Centre for Hypersonics on two important ARC Discovery Projects involved with the hyperbolic entry of spacecraft into the major planets of the solar system. One is related to non-equilibrium aerothermodynamics for Earth and Mars entries. and the other is related to further understanding the complex gas phase and surface chemistry phenomena experienced during entry into the giant planets with their atmospheres containing mixtures of Hydrogen and Helium.

This project involves experimentation in UQ's state of the art X2 and X3 superorbital expansion tubes, and analysis of the subsequent data with the purpose of gaining fundamental understanding of the phenomena driving the state of the shock layers which surround a hypervelocity vehicle, (and which provide the critical interface between the vehicle and the atmosphere, analogous to the role of tyres on a car), and validation of numerical procedures for modelling the processes. You will be responsible for aiding in the management of the projects and the supervision of RHD students, performing and supporting impulse wind tunnel experiments using both optical and physical measurement techniques, designing new test models and commissioning them, if required, and representing the projects internationally at overseas meetings. Hypersonics is an integrated  multidisciplinary field, and candidates with a strong background in engineering and relevant sciences such as chemistry, physics and mathematics are encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Research

Manage and execute experimental campaigns in the X2 and X3 facilities.

Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

Work with UQ colleagues and our international partners in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
