Job Description
The Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology in the School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to engage in NIH-funded ongoing studies in Dr. Chen’s laboratory. Specifically, the current research projects in Dr. Chen’s laboratory are focused on defining cellular, molecular, and epigenetic mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity, learning and memory in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI)-induced AD-like disease, and on identifying novel therapeutic targets for prevention and treatment of these neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Chen’s laboratory employs a variety of approaches, including molecular biology, epigenetics, electrophysiological recordings, imaging, and behavioral tests, to elucidate the mechanisms underlying pathogenesis and neuropathology of AD and TBI-induced AD-like neuropathology. Applicants should have a PhD and/or MD in neuroscience or related fields. We are seeking applicants with experience in epigenetics, bioinformatics, molecular cloning, calcium imaging, and in vivo optogenetics. We are particularly interested in applicants with research experience in studying neuron-glia and/or astrocyte-microglia interactions.
Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Additional information regarding Dr. Chen’s laboratory and scientific interests are at https://physiology.uthscsa.edu/team-member/chu-chen-ph-d/ and our Department and the UT Health San Antonio at https://physiology.uthscsa.edu/.
San Antonio is a fast growing major city in south-central Texas and the seventh-largest city in the United States by population. The Alamo is one of the most important historical sites in the United States and a must-see attraction, while the River Walk is San Antonio's centerpiece. The cost of living in San Antonio is relatively lower than other big cities in US. UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and the Long School of Medicine have a highly productive research enterprise replete with basic scientific discoveries and state-of-the-art clinical care. UT Health Science Center at San Antonio is one of the few universities with NIH-funded aging center and NIH-funded clinical trials center, and with world leaders in aging (Barshop Institute for Longevity & Aging Studies), Alzheimer's disease and dementia (Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer's & Neurodegenerative Diseases). We have a highly interactive and dynamic research environment, and encourage collaborations with colleagues across disciplines.
