Job Description
The Photonics Research and Innovation Flagship (PREIN) is a multi-disciplinary competence cluster focusing on the development of light-based technologies. PREIN is a national network that gathers the cutting-edge expertise in Photonics in Finland, including Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland, Aalto University and VTT research center. PREIN is one of the six Finnish Flagships funded by the Academy of Finland. The Flagship programme is a northern fleet of excellent science, successful collaboration and solutions for tomorrow. Its rationale is to support future knowledge and sustainable solutions to societal challenges and seek to advance economic growth by developing new business opportunities. Combining the resources and infrastructures of its partners, PREIN covers all the Photonics value chain, from fundamental research to applied research, seeding industrial collaboration, supporting mobility and career development.
PREIN develops light-based technologies for applications in life science, energy-saving, ICT and environmental monitoring. The partners have complementary expertise and skills, ranging from the design and fabrication of nanomaterials and optical components to system integration and instrumentation development. Our research focuses on light field control, new materials and structures and the development of light sources with tailored characteristics, all seeding to the development of novel technologies ranging from e.g. portable sensors to LIDAR for environmental and industrial monitoring or smart photovoltaic modules for eco-efficient solutions.
We are looking for 5 talented Postdoctoral Research Fellows to work on the following themes at Tampere University:
1. Classical and quantum light interactions with photonic nanostructures:
The aim of the project is to study the properties of classical and quantum light coupled to metamaterial-based nanostructure, such as newly emerging epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) structures. The ultimate goal is to characterise the coupling between light and ENZ media, as well as study the properties of the radiation emitted by such structures, including coherence (both from a classical and quantum perspective), superradiance, statistical properties of the emitted light
2. Tunable plasmonic applications:
The project focuses on investigations of tunable plasmonic nanostructures for emission control. The applicant should have a solid experience in nanolithography (electron beam and nanoimprint lithography) and other nanofabrication and cleanrom process. Additional experience in e.g. plasmonics, photoresponsive polymers, emitters etc. would be a plus.
3. High power mid-infrared broadband sources:
The goal is to develop broadband light sources including e.g. broadband LEDs and supercontinuum sources operating in the mid-infrared for sensing and imaging applications. The candidate is expected to have a solid background in light sources development and in nonlinear optics. Experience with sensing (e.g. IR absorption spectroscopy) and imaging (e.g. OCT) techniques will be considered a plus.
4. Nanowires and quantum dots single photon emitters:
The project will develop nanostructures on semiconductors and metals for single photon emission and manipulation. The research involves the realization of nanocavities for semiconductor quantum dots and nanowires, as well as the development and fabrication of plasmonic structures for the manipulation of photonic and plasmonic quantum states. The candidate is expected to have experience in nanolithography (electron beam and nanoimprint lithography) as well as clean room processing. Experience with simulations of optical properties of nanostructures (FDTD) and with optical characterization techniques are assets.
5. Si/III-Vs photonic integrated circuits applications:
The aim is to develop application specific photonic integrated circuits by combining optoelectronics and silicon photonics technologies. The research targets primarily the development of hybrid integration approaches and demonstration of improved functionalities for emerging applications in sensing, LIDAR or microwave photonics. The candidate is expected to have a good understanding of photonics technologies and applications, with specialization in at least one of the following areas: optoelectronics and silicon photonics, simulation and clean room processing of photonic components, high-precision assembly of photonic components. General knowledge on design toolkits for silicon photonics and interaction with silicon photonics foundries would be a plus.
Requirements
We are looking for versatile and independent persons with a solid background in Optics and Photonics. Successful candidates must hold a doctoral degree in a suitable field and a proven publication record. The positions are primarily targeted towards scientists who have received their Ph.D. in the past few years.
Applicants should have an excellent command of written and oral English, good communication skills, as well as a research experience in both independent project work and collaborative environment.
Theoretical traits for the analysis of experimental work and the ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students are additional benefits. The positions also involve some teaching assistant duties, so experience and/or interest in teaching will be a plus.
We offer
All positions will be filled for an initial two-year duration with possible extension for two additional years. The positions can be filled from the beginning of September 2019. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary in the position is around 3400-3600 EUR/month.
How to apply
Please submit your application through our online recruitment system. The closing date for applications is 31 August 2019 (at 23.59 EEST / 20.59 UTC). Please write your application and all accompanying documents in English and attach them in PDF format.
Applications should include the following documents:
Cover letter
Curriculum Vitae according to TENK guidelines
List of publications according to Academy of Finland guidelines
