Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral researcher in the Centre for Climate and Air Pollution Studies within the School of Physics at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
This position is funded through project SAFER (Screening of the Irish Waste Stream for Persistent Organic Chemicals) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Ireland and is available from August 2019 to April 2021.
To assist development of waste management approaches, maximising polymer recycling while minimising contaminationof recyclate, with persistent organic chemicals (POCs), SAFER generates a comprehensive database on their concentrations in the Irish waste stream, providing information about which components are contaminated with which POCs and derives estimates of POC masses in the Irish waste stream. Additionally, stemming from the EPA-funded WAFER project, SAFER addresses the concern that although in 2015-16, the incidence of “false exceedances” of low POP concentration limit (LPCL) values for regulated brominated flame retardants (BFRs) identified by portable XRF measurements of bromine was acceptably low; increasing use of non-regulated BFRs will increase “false exceedance” incidence, rendering use of portable XRF to monitor compliance with LPCL values for regulated BFRs less effective. SAFER also evaluates whether data on antimony and bromine concentrations in samples exceeding the LPCL, can reduce the number of false exceedances. We also evaluate the impact of restrictions on already-regulated chemicals on their presence in the Irish waste stream, and provide baseline measurements for other POCs (namely perfluoroalkyl substances, chlorinated organophosphates, and “novel” brominated flame retardants) against which the success of future actions taken to reduce their presence in the waste stream may be evaluated.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will be responsible for closely collaborating with the NUI Galway supervisor and the adjoint team of experts from the University of Birmingham, UK, to conduct the SAFER project. Specifically, he/she will:
· · Contact waste processing companies, establish waste sampling protocols, obtain and laboratory condition plastics, WEEE, and soft furnishing waste samples for analysis,
· · Apply XRF and GC/MS/MS to establish POC concentrations in the samples,
· · Contribute to elucidate temporal trends in waste POC, and
· · Contribute to establish a national inventory of POC compounds in the Irish waste stream.
· · Secondary responsibilities will be the assisting with project outreach activities and with the dissemination of project data both to project participants, at scientific conferences and to non-scientific audiences.
Qualifications/Skills required:
Essential Requirements:
· PhD in Physics or Chemistry.
· Experience in field and laboratory research on chemicals in plastic waste and furnishings, specifically brominated flame retardant and perfluoroalkyl substances.
· Experience in field applied XRF and laboratory GC/MS/MS analytical methods.
· Evidence of scientific publications and dissemination of results at conferences
· Excellent verbal and written communication (English language) skills
· Full driving licence
Desirable Requirements:
· Familiarity with research in waste management, air/soil/groundwater pollution
· Experience in statistical analysis of environmental research data
· Experience in science outreach activities
Salary: €39,530 per annum
Start date: Position is available from August 1st 2019
