About This Opportunity

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will undertake research activities in the GRDC-UQ INVITA externally-funded project, under supervision and with input from other UQ, CSIRO and Wageningen University team members.

In this role, your main research task will be to oversee development of statistical and machine-learning analysis methods to interpret the value of high throughput phenotyping data using combinations of observed data and simulations built from these datasets. Methods applied in this work include the use of hyperspectral and image data collected or simulated at multiple scales.

Key responsibilities will include:

Research

Working with colleagues and postgraduates in field trials at Gatton and other sites and in using hyperspectral, weather and observed experiment data as well as computer simulations of crop growth and spectral reflectance and analyses to contribute to outcomes to improve high- throughput phenotyping applications in INVITA

Participate in applications for external research funding.

Prepare research publications and progress reports and participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.

Teaching and Learning

Contribute to supervision of Higher Degree by Research students in the project.

Contribution to teaching and tutoring in relevant courses

Service and Engagement

Link with the agricultural research community and wider industry, government departments, professional bodies and the community.

Perform a range of administrative functions for the project, including contributing to preparation of milestone reports to GRDC

Contribute to activities that benefit the organisational unit, including participation in decision-making and serving on internal committees.

Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.

About You

PhD in field crop agronomy, physiology or crop sensing.

Demonstrated abilities in applying analytical methods in machine learning to the interpretation of hyperspectral reflectance data collected in field trials of crops, applying knowledge in one or more of the above disciplines.

Demonstrated skills in statistical programming languages (R, Python) and experience in the use of statistical and crop simulation models and the applications of these in analyses of large datasets.

Track record of publication of research findings in peer reviewed journals and conferences.

An ability to establish effective relationships to represent and promote the research area at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

Well-developed communication, interpersonal and consultative skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from a multidisciplinary  background.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed-term position through for up to 2 years at Academic Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $72,144.35 to $96,530.67 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $84,408.89 to $112,940.88 per annum.
