Postdoctoral Researcher/Scientist Cell image Project

Regenerative Medicine Institute, College of Medicine

Ref. No. NUIG RES 200-22

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral researcher with the Regenerative Medicine Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

This position is funded by Enterprise Ireland and is available from 01/09/2022 to the contract end date of 31/10/2024.

The Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) is a world-class biomedical research centre which focuses on research in cell and gene therapies to address a number of major disease targets.  Our research spans a broad spectrum of translational strategies including basic stem cell biology, advanced manufacturing, contemporary analytics and clinical trials.

The CELLIMAGE Project, funded under the Disruptive Technologies innovation fund is designed to develop novel artificial intelligence tools to support next generation cell therapy manufacturing.  The project is a partnership between REMEDI, Valitacell Ltd., and Intel.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will carry out work involving the isolation, expansion and characterisation of tissue derived stem cells. Particular duties will include the use of metabolomics mass spectrometry to elucidate a detailed understanding of therapeutically useful cells in terms of their metabolic state and processing of lipids and other molecules under a variety of culture conditions and in response to licensing and processing environments.  The entire body of work will be carried out with a view towards good manufacturing practice (GMP) applications in cell manufacturing and batch release.  A detailed practical understanding of bioinformatics tools used to analyse genomic, proteomic and metabolomic data is essential.

Duties:

•Isolate and expand stem cell populations from post-natal tissues from human and animal species

•Develop protocols involving the use of imaging mass spectrometry to assess the metabolomic profile of cell preparations for use in therapeutic applications.  These may include mesenchymal stromal cells from a variety of tissue sources and mammalian species, as well as induced pluripotent stem cells and derived differentiated cells.

•Utilise available software and bioinformatics tools for the analysis and presentation of metabolomic data and/or where necessary, develop new analytical modalities for data interpretation.

•Have a complete understanding of current trends in this research area, including up to date knowledge of publications.

•Maintain accurate records of laboratory experimentation and data in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice.

•Prepare detailed periodic reports as needed.

•Present the results of the relevant research investigation at laboratory meetings, partner meetings and conferences as required.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

•PhD in a life sciences discipline

•Experience in and understanding of cell biology, cell culture techniques and advanced methods for cell characterisation

•Expertise in the use of bioinformatics tools for the analysis of mass spectrometry data and correlation with other data such as gene expression profiles, proteomics and cell phenotype.

•Detailed understanding and practical experience of stem cell biology and the use of cells in therapeutic applications.

Desirable Requirements:

•3-4 years’ experience in stem cell biology or in the application of cellular therapies in human medicine.

•Proven track record demonstrating experience in advanced methods of cell characterisation, including the utilisation of large data in genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics used for these purposes.

•An understanding of GMP-compliant cell manufacturing.

Salary: €39,523 – €45,609 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: Position is available from 01/09/2022
