Description

This post is part of a research project relating to green hydrogen and the optimisation of water electrolysis reactions. It is funded by the European Research Commission as part of a consortium of European partners: University of Turku (Fin), Aalto University (Fin), Nordic Bioproducts Group (Fin), Aarhus University (DK), University of Limerick (IE), University of Greenwich (UK), and Lancaster University (UK). The project will develop a proof-of-concept and innovative platform demonstrating both electricity storage, green hydrogen production as well as the joint production of decarbonized chemicals based on a flow battery coupled with mediated hydrogen production and oxidation reactions.

At Lancaster University the focus is on the mediated hydrogen evolution reaction over specially designed heterogeneous catalysts. Green hydrogen is generated using a redox activated mediator which is initially reduced electrochemically, and subsequently oxidised over a separate catalytic bed to release hydrogen.

The postdoctoral researcher sought for this particular post will be focussed on the design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalytic materials for hydrogen evolution, the design and fabrication of catalytic reaction chambers for static and flow cell environments, and the synthesis and evaluation of electron donating redox species to be applied in redox flow batteries.

You should have a PhD in chemistry or chemically-related sciences, coupled with experience in the synthesis and characterisation of heterogeneous catalysts. Capability and confidence in synthetic materials chemistry is essential, with evidence of experience in optimisation of reaction processes. The applicant is also expected to have knowledge of electrochemistry with experience of working with chemical reactors and/or flow reactors desirable. They are also expected to be proficient in aspects of materials characterisation.

The role will include the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, the preparation of grant proposals and publications, and other laboratory related administrative roles to support the PI and her group. It is essential that the applicant has experience and confidence in writing research articles and can evidence this in their application.
