Description

This post is part of a research project relating to the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to hydrocarbon products. It is funded by the European Research Commission as part of a Starting Grant awarded to the PI. This project aims to preliminarily explore the potential of batch generated electron donor solutions to reduce CO2 and/or CO via a heterogenous catalyst, with a view to developing a process with higher energy density, efficiency, scalability, long-term stability, and low cost compared to traditional electrochemical methods. A key focus will be utilising sustainable and low- cost materials to achieve this goal.

The postdoctoral researcher sought in this particular post will be primarily  focused on the design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalytic materials, the design and fabrication of catalytic reaction chambers for static and flow cell environments. But they will also contribute to the synthesis and evaluation of electron donating redox species.

You should have a PhD in chemistry or chemically-related sciences, coupled with experience in the rational design, synthesis and characterisation of heterogeneous catalysts. Capability and confidence in synthetic materials chemistry are essential, with evidence of experience in optimisation of catalytic processes. The applicant is expected to have a wide range of experience utilising standard materials synthesis methods including hydrothermal, solid state and sol gel synthesis. They are also expected to be proficient and independent in materials characterisation such as microscopy, XRD, BET, TGA and particle size analysis. An understanding of Raman and XPS is desirable.

The role will include the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, the preparation of grant proposals and publications, and other laboratory related administrative roles to support the PI and her group. It is essential that the applicant has experience and confidence in writing research articles and can evidence this in their application.
