Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher, APC Microbiome Ireland
University College Cork
Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher, APC Microbiome Ireland
20 months, Fixed-term, Whole-time post
Position summary
APC Microbiome Ireland is a trans-disciplinary research centre, with clinicians, clinician-scientists and basic scientists from diverse backgrounds working in teams, sharing ideas and resources. Although focused upon the gastrointestinal bacterial community (the microbiota), the scale and scope of the work has become one of the fastest moving areas of biology. The microbiota is not only a target for treatment and prevention of disease, it is a repository for functional food ingredients and even new drugs and is a source of novel biomarkers of disease risk. The scientific organisation of the APC consists of a matrix of ‘spokes' or themes of intellectual pursuit which are supported by multiple horizontal or shared technology platforms.
The Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher will work within APC's “Microbes to Molecules” theme which mines biological entities (‘pharmabiotics') from the gut, including probiotics, prebiotics, bacteriocins, bacteriophages and other bioactive molecules with potential in food and pharmaceutical applications. The successful candidate will play an important lead role on an industry- funded project that investigates the effectivity of bioactives in extending product shelf life in the food industry. He/she will be joined by a research assistant and take on the leadership role within this project, directing and performing shelf-life trials and taking responsibility for reporting directly to the industry partner on project progress and developments. Several administration tasks will also be required as well as caretaking of essential equipment and their maintenance. The candidate will need experience in directing and performing independent research, have the necessary wet-lab skills, as well as an ability to take the lead on all the above-mentioned project reporting and administrative requirements on this project.
UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.
The ideal candidate will be/have:
Post-doctoral experience (>3 years) with a background microbiology and food grade antimicrobials.
Experience with antimicrobials and the analysis thereof.
Experience with investigating the microbiome (16S rRNA sequencing) and the necessary wet-lab skills to do such.
The ability to lead the research in a dynamic manner to facilitate any required analysis.
A highly skilled and adaptable individual with a proven ability to work well within a team and report to stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
Project management skills to ensure wet-lab milestones/deliverables are achieved.
