For the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Automation and Mechatronics (RAM) Section, Robotics Research Group, we are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong interest and track record in software development for robotics, kinematics and dynamics, semantic mapping, and/or tasklevel programming. The Robotics Research Group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Division of Robotics, Automation and Mechatronics (RAM), has pioneered robotics research in Europe since the mid-1970s. The group was among the first to develop active force feedback for assembly operations. Already in 1980 it developed learning insertion algorithms based on stochastic automata. It has covered virtually all aspects of sensor-based robotics, from the high-level task specification down to low-level sensor- based control, and applied the research results in a variety of industrial applications. In the last decade the group shifted its attention towards service robots (behaviour-based mobile manipulation, shared control, learning control), medical robotics (natural interfaces, haptic bilateral control), industrial robot assistants, and active sensing. RAM has created several spin- off companies that are active in robotics-related activities, has initiated several free and open-source software projects in robotics (Orocos, KDL, rFSM, eTaSL…), and has participated in a large number of robotics and control oriented EU projects. More information is available through the link below.

Responsibilities
Several European and regional projects are running or are about to start in our group, specifically:
1. HYSLAM, on semantic SLAM for autonomous mobile systems
2. AUTOCRAFT, on automated craftsmanship skill transfer
3. ASSEMBLYRECON, on online assembly execution systems
4. AIPRISM on AI-powered human-centred robot interactions for smart manufacturing (https: // cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101058589)
The applicant will be involved in the research and software development aspects in one or two of these projects. She or he will also be expected to take up part of the managerial tasks.
Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and communicative researcher with a background in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science or a related field. The candidate should fit (at least) one of the two profiles sketched below:
PROFILE 1: robot task programming expert

Task-level robot control, task scheduling
PROFILE 2: estimation and world modelling expert
Sensor data processing for example for kinematics and dynamics, numerical optimization, SLAM-applications or computer vision, ...
World model representations, visualization, … experience with e.g. URDF, COLLADA, ...
For both profiles, experience in software development for robotics or related field is required. The following elements will be appreciated:
Experience with robotics middleware. List clearly what you did.
Contributions to free and open source software projects. Please list them clearly in your application or send us your portfolio.
Multi computer languages proficiency, such as C/C++, Lua, Python,, ... The candidate is furthermore expected to:
Have a very good knowledge of English (spoken and written)
Be able to work independently, accurately and methodically
Be a team player
Take responsibility to be the driving force in a research project
Present research findings at national and international conferences
Publish research findings in international journals
Hands-on experience with robot platforms and sensor systems (vision, force, …) are a plus.
Offer
The successful candidate will receive:
A postdoctoral scholarship for one year, renewable up to three years
Multiple benefits (health insurance, access to university infrastructure and sports facilities, etc.)
The opportunity to participate in research collaborations and international conferences A start date in the course of 2023 is to be agreed upon.
Interested?
Applicants should use the online application tool to submit:
• An academic CV
• A statement of research interests and career goals
• Transcripts of your academic degrees
• If available: links to free and open source software projects to which you have contributed, with a clear explanation of what your personal contribution is/was
• An electronic copy of your PhD dissertation and your most important journal and/or conference publications
