Job Description
The School for the Future of Innovation in Society at Arizona State University, with the New York Academy of Sciences, is seeking post-doctoral research scholars to join an interdisciplinary team in the area of AI and Society based at the New York Academy of Sciences. Successful candidates will work closely with an ASU faculty member and staff at the New York Academy to develop an individualized mentoring plan, including faculty from ASU’s College of Global Futures as well as others from its Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and other units.
Fellows will participate in a curated education-and-training program consisting of mentorship from academics and teaching at ASU, internships with public, private, and non-profit partners, professional development training, and service learning through the New York Academy of Sciences programming. Fellows’ time will be shared among New York City, Arizona State University, and internship sites.
Fellow’s responsibilities include the following:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research in the field of AI and Society.
- Publish high-quality research papers in leading academic journals and present research findings at conferences and workshops.
- Mentor and supervise junior researchers and students.
- Contribute to the development of an AI & Society conference.
- Write thought leadership articles for publication in journals and for dissemination to the general public.
- Teach one course at ASU.
- Participate in professional development activities including grant writing, communication skills training, and other activities.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in a relevant field such as computer science, artificial intelligence, psychology, philosophy, sociology, ethics, law (JD), or a related field. (Degree must be in hand to start the fellowship as a post-doc.)
- Evidence of strong research background and expertise in the field of AI and Society, including publications in leading academic journals.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience conducting interdisciplinary research and working with researchers from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience engaging with stakeholders inside and outside the university.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate in and across different epistemic cultures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
This is a full-time, fiscal year appointment and is renewable for a second year contingent on continued funding, satisfactory performance, and the needs of the university.
