POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN SEDIMENTARY IRON ISOTOPE ANALYSIS (FIXED TERM)
Job Description
Post-doctoral research associate in sedimentary iron isotope analysis(Fixed Term)
The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, is seeking a Post- doctoral research associate (PDRA) in sedimentary iron isotope analysis. The role is to sequentially extract iron minerals from modern ferruginous and euxinic sediments and measure its iron isotope composition, and then to do a similar thing on rocks from the geological record. There also will be an incubation of sediments to monitor the evolving iron isotopic composition of the sediment as conditions change from ferruginous to euxinic. The programme is funded by NERC and the PDRA is available until the grant ends on 31 Jan 2023. Ideally the candidate would start later this year (2020).
Applications are invited from candidates with relevant expertise in isotope geochemistry, preferably including column chemistry and MC-ICPMS metal stable isotope geochemistry. Expertise in wet chemistry sediment sample preparation labs is preferable. You will work as part of a wider team of geochemists and isotope geochemists interested in the preservation of geochemical signals across Earth's surface environment. Time will be spent during the postdoc at the University of Leeds for the sequential extraction of iron minerals.
The candidate will have (or be about to obtain) a PhD and preferably some postdoctoral experience in a relevant area. They will have significant experience in geochemistry and paleoclimatology, good communication skills, the ability to work in a team, good IT and data handling skills, and preferably a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals .
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 January 2023 in the first instance.
